The final day of the first weekend of the Class C State Tournament in Green Isle featured the reigning state champions taking care of business to advance, as well as a host team move on. Green Isle, Raymond and St. Peter advanced Sunday in Green Isle to the second weekend of state.
Green Isle 6, Regal 4
After three innings, it was a scoreless tie. After the fourth, it was knotted at two. From there, playing on their home field, the Green Isle Irish scored four in the fifth and held on for a 6-4 win over the Regal Eagles.
Alex Twenge had a 3-for-4 day with three RBI and two runs, including a home run, and he pitched the final two innings for the Irish, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out three. Twenge’s three-run shot in the fifth helped Green Isle go up 6-2 after five.
Green Isle starter Cody Hallahan went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out six.
Draftee Colin Richards of Starbuck took the loss for Regal, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk over the fifth and sixth innings, striking out two. Chris Beier started for Regal and went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with one strikeout.
Green Isle plays the Lamberton Long Sox at noon Sunday, Aug. 27 in Hamburg.
Raymond 10, Mora 1
The defending champions had little trouble in their opener, as the Raymond Rockets dispatched the Mora Blue Devils 10-1.
Despite earning the No. 3 seed out of Region 11, the Rockets played like they were favored, scoring three in the first and five in the fourth to rout the Blue Devils.
Justin Koenen had a 5-for-3 day with two runs, two doubles and three RBI, while first baseman Kyle Knott was 2 for 5 with two runs, four RBI, a double and a home run.
Alex Lothammer started on the mound for Raymond, going six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks, striking out six. Cole Christenson finished with three hitless innings, striking out three.
Asa Patterson started for Mora, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Mora’s Sean Graff drove in Hunter Foss for the Blue Devils’ lone run.
Raymond plays Buckman at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hamburg.
St. Peter 2, Avon 1
Alex Hoehn legged out an infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, which scored Shea Roehrkasse for a 2-1 St. Peter win.
The Saints had a 1-0 lead after one, but Avon’s Reed Voit drove in Caleb Curry in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1.
Avon managed just one run on 10 hits and four walks and left 11 on base. St. Peter starter Jesse Anderson went five innings, allowing one run on seven hits and three walks, striking out two and hitting a batter. Andy Regner finished the game, going four shutout innings and allowing three hits and a walk, striking out two.
Avon’s Kyle Collins went 8 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk, striking out 12.
St. Peter moves on to face Hutchinson at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Hamburg.
