Saturday’s slate of Class C state tournament games in Green Isle featured a pair of extra inning matchups and two shutouts as New Prague, Jordan, Union Hill and Bemidji advanced.
New Prague 6, Sobieski 2
It took an extra-inning explosion and a late rally, but the New Prague Orioles continued their run with a 6-2, 10-inning win over the Sobieski Skis, the 2016 runners-up.
The Orioles tied the game 2-2 with a run in the top of the ninth. In the 10th, they scored four runs, all with two outs, including a home run from Zack Dubanoski.
The Orioles had a 1-0 lead after the second inning, but Sobieski scored two in the sixth to go up 2-1.
Nathan Sprouls went 6 2/3 innings for New Prague, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, striking out seven. Draftee Trevor Smisek of Montgomery got the win, pitching 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief, walking two and striking out three.
Tyler Jendro went 9 2/3 innings for Sobieski, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks, hitting two batters and striking out seven. Thomas Miller finished the final third of the 10th inning.
New Prague moved on to face Jordan at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Norwood.
Jordan 5, Elrosa 0
Mitch Bockenstedt pitched a five-hit shutout as the Jordan Brewers advanced with a 5-0 win over the Elrosa Saints.
Bockenstedt struck out six and didn’t allow a walk in his complete-game effort, and hit one batter. The Brewers knocked out 11 hits in support, scoring two in the first inning and adding single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Jordan’s Joe Lucas was 4 for 5 with a run, double and two stolen bases. Jake Lucas and Aleck Beckman each had two hits and two RBI.
Ethan Vogt went seven innings for Elrosa, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits and a walk, striking out eight. Aaron Vogt finished the final two innings, holding Jordan scoreless and allowing two hits.
Union Hill 7, Carver 6 (12)
The Carver Black Sox saw their long awaited state run come to an end in a back-and-forth game with Union Hill, as the Bulldogs won a 7-6, 12-inning affair.
Union Hill scored in the 11th to go up a run, but Carver tied the game in the bottom of the frame on an error. The Bulldogs struck again in the 12th and held off the Black Sox in the bottom, one of three Region 3C teams to advance to the quarterfinals.
Carver took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth, but Union hill scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie the game.
The Bulldogs led 1-0 after one and 3-1 after four. Carver tied the game at 1 in the second and at 3 in the sixth.
Union Hill’s Erick Bisek had a 2 for 4 day with a home run, three RBI and two walks, while Matt Beckius was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a walk.
Carver got a combined six hits from Adam Fredericks, Sam Warner and Bryce Tuma in the middle of the lineup.
Union Hill moved on to face Bemidji at 11 a.m. Sunday in Norwood.
Bemidji 2, Sartell 0
Two early runs held up for the Bemidji Blue Ox in a 2-1 win over Sartell.
Bemidji scored runs in the first and third innings, with Cody Benson and Cody Rutledge notching the RBI.
Ryan Hirt (four innings, five hits, four walks, two strikeouts) and Connor McNallan (five innings, one unearned run on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts) combined to limit Sartell to one run, coming in the sixth inning.
David Deminsky went nine innings for the Muskies, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts. Sartell outhit Bemidji 7-5.
